RESEARCH TECHNICIAN II

Temporary (4 months)
40 hrs per week
Approximate start date: January 5, 2009, or after
$9.50/hour

Assist the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (located at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln) and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission with field research collecting home-range and habitat-use information on river otters along the Platte River using remote sensing (radio telemetry). Capture river otters with the help of experienced trappers and training from agency personnel, implant radio transmitters into each otter, release and monitor otters, primarily by ground tracking. Collect and analyze data such as home range, daily/nightly and seasonal movements, proximities and interactions between otters, habitat preferences and use. The proposed primary study area consists of about a stretch of Platte River located in Central Nebraska . A possible secondary study area consists of a stretch of North Platte River, located in western Nebraska . This temporary position is with the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Most work will be outdoors, in various weather conditions. Work will begin approximately January 5, 2009 and end approximately April 31, 2009, with the possibility of an extension until August 31, 2009. Start and end dates are flexible. Housing provided. Position is grant funded.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in natural resources or related field plus one year experience in conducting related field work OR equivalent experience/coursework. Must possess a valid driver’s license (a driver’s check will be conducted).

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in radio telemetry, GIS and animal trapping

Will begin reviewing applications December 1, 2008.
